Myopia Control

'Myopia control' has become the increasingly adopted term to describe the use of treatments aimed to slow the progression of myopia. These treatments include special types of spectacle lenses, soft contact lenses, ortho-k and atropine eye drops.

What is Myopia?

Myopia, or what many people call nearsightedness, is when someone can see things up close just fine, but objects further away look blurry.

In someone with clear vision, light rays focus on the retina at the back of the eye. If someone has a myopic eye, the light rays focus in front of the retina, resulting in the formation of a blurred image on the retina, requiring correction through glasses or contact lenses.

Myopia can be mild, moderate, or severe:

  • Mild myopia: between -0.25 and -2.75

  • Moderate myopia: between -3.00 and -5.00

  • Severe myopia: greater than -5.00

Children can start becoming nearsighted as they grow older, usually between the ages of 6 and 13. It's also something that can run in families. If one parent is nearsighted, their child has a higher chance of being nearsighted too. And if both parents are nearsighted, the chances are even higher.

Myopia control for children

Taking early action is key when it comes to managing myopia, making eye exams for children incredibly important. If you think your child might be nearsighted, the first move should be to schedule an eye exam.

It's not widely known, but children of any age can get their eyes tested. For those too young to read, our certified opticians use unique charts featuring shapes and images, making it possible for them to assess vision accurately.

After identifying myopia in your child, they will likely need glasses for correction. This is also the point where you can consider options for myopia control to help manage the condition.

Is myopia something I need to be concerned about for my child?

Many parents might not realise how serious myopia, or nearsightedness, can be for their children. While getting glasses is a common way to deal with it, this alone doesn't stop myopia from getting worse over time. If not addressed, children's myopia could progress to high myopia.

Those with high myopia face a greater risk of developing conditions that can threaten their vision, including glaucoma, cataracts, macular degeneration, and retinal detachment.

That's where myopia control comes in. It's a strategy aimed at slowing down the worsening of myopia in children. Our experienced opticians understand the risks and discomfort myopia can cause. They strongly urge parents to explore the myopia control options available for their children to help protect their vision.
